Catch A Rising Star! Today on 411 Voices Radio My Interview with Sarah Vonskamp, Tween Author of FILLY GIRLS!

Tween author, Sarah Voskamp

Today I had the privilege of interviewing two amazing young ladies, Abrielle Mullins, country singer and Sarah Voskamp, tween author of the book, FILLY GIRLS.

Sarah Voskamp is only eleven years old but she has the writing talent of more seasoned authors.  Inspired by her friends to write a book about friendship and horses, her debut book FILLY GIRLS has sold more than two thousand copies.  She has appeared on television, radio and in print media.  Like Abrielle she credits her parents and friends as her support.  And the two also share a cautionary tale – stay true to yourself and be cautious of those who only want to be friends because of your life in the spotlight!

To learn more about Sarah visit her website: http://www.SarahVoskamp.wordpress.com

Please refer to the last entry on this blog for tons of information about Abrielle Mullins

***Sarah has agreed to give a copy of FILLY GIRLS to one lucky winner!  Simply comment below or on my SIGNING FAMILIES Facebook page to be eligible to win!  Drawing will be held on September 30, 2011 an awarded by chosen number via Random.org

The Power of the Mommy in Social Media!

I recently read an article in USA TODAY which indicated that “Mommy Bloggers” were one of the top influences in buying trends for the BACK TO SCHOOL season!  Now some people may have been surprised at this commentary, however, I was not.  So, without much further ado, I would like to introduce to you some of my “reasons” why I already knew that women / mommies in social media had power, influence and business savvy! And why companies are paying close attention to their websites, blogs, FACEBOOK posts and TWITTER feeds!

First, meet Shara Lawrence- Weiss of MOMMY PERKS,  Early Childhood News and Resources and several other successful websites.  I often refer to Shara as my media guru.  As a integral member of 411 VOICES, Shara is the first one hopping on TWITTER and FACEBOOK in the morning (impressive as she lives in Arizona and beats out her East Coast colleagues!)  Her MOMMY PERKS concept is BRILLIANT.  Simply, having a group of moms/dad/ individuals/ businesses sharing ideas, bargains and information under one roof and in the spirit of giving back to the community!  Many times Shara will announce “perks” from other companies via her amazing “PR machine”.  How do I know this to be true?  Well, I need not look any further than the stats for SIGNING FAMILIES.  My little ‘ole sign language instructional company melded with developmental psychology was a  regional business until I learned about Shara and MOMMY PERKS.  Fast forward three years later and Shara has helped promote my company to another league- international connections and sales. She is that good! And my cup runneth over with happiness that I “met” my guru thanks to FACEBOOK!  (You can “LIKE” MOMMY PERKS on FACEBOOK  and follow her on TWITTER, too!)

Second, meet two extraordinary ladies who are like peanut butter and jelly – perfect together.  Britt Michaelian and Dabney Porte both have merged their collective efforts to form Social Media Girlfriends.  Britt, who also is a founding member of 411 VOICES, is no stranger to working in media with helping women start, grow and promote their businesses, with style.  Her personal brand is  Work Smart Lifestyle and her “How to… ” videos are exceptional.

Dabney is someone who I “fell over” while tip – toeing through TWITTER.  She has such a dynamic presence that it is hard not to follow her missives.  She is an expert at getting people motivated and helping others through her social media genius.  Her KIDS ARE HEROES  affiliation, helps to make an excellent example of what is GREAT about social media.  I am hoping that Britt and Dabney continue in their venture to show others how social media can help empower women and improve lives of those who are struggling.

In a nutshell, Social Media Girlfriends  has been described by this dynamic duo as follows.. “Our mission is to bring brilliance together on a global level where women can support, encourage and establish fabulous relationships!”

WOW- I can’t wait to see what transpires with those who join the TWITTER #SMGirlfriends Hastag.

Lastly,  I would be remiss in not mentioning ALL of the amazing women from 411 VOICES who work tirelessly at giving back to the world far more than they receive.  For the purpose of this particular blog I will focus on  the 411 VOICES SPEAKERS ALLIANCE.  This collective of experts, including Britt and Shara, know how to help the budding entrepreneur or work at home mom maximize their potential.  I have listed them here so you can easily access their wisdom to help YOU!  Collectively you can find 411 VOICES on FACEBOOK and TWITTER.

Kristin Andress – This author and very successful entrepreneur is another PR sensation.  She has the eyes, ears and trust of many top executives, including Stedman Graham.  Kristin also is known for her work with helping young women at risk. Follow Kristin on FACEBOOK.

Sharon Davis 2 WORK AT HOME.  Need a job? Want to work from home?  Wish to start a home based business?  Sharon is your gal!  Sharon has dedicated much of 2011 to helping her friends in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami. Follow Sharon on FACEBOOK

When it comes to philanthropy and helping to empower young women, 411 VOICES has several amazing stand-outs, including- Margaret McSweeney and Maimah Karmo. Both who know from first hand experience the true need to help young women negotiate through life’s toughest problems.  Follow Margaret and Maimah on FACEBOOK.

Astrid Stromberg – Offers exceptional online personal coaching with a twist – she is a psychic medium! Her Blog Talk Radio series, BRILLIANT ESSENCE, is well received and listened by many! Catch her on the airwaves!  Follow Astrid on FACEBOOK.

And when you feel the need to reclaim and rejuvenate your business and personal “self”- look no further than Rachel Wright.  She is truly the Mother of Reinvention!  Follow Rachel of FACEBOOK.

In closing, social media is a powerful force and I am pleased to see that mainstream media has taken notice of the thousands of women who spread their influence and wisdom across “cyberville”.

As always, thanks for reading…

When the Stock Market Impacts Back to School Shopping

It has been quite a week with the stock market acting like a roller coaster at SIX FLAGS. It doesn’t take a genius to know that all the recent negative economic events have had a huge impact on families and businesses.  And, if you doubt that fact simply walk in to a store that has aisles of unsold BACK TO SCHOOL products and then listen to the moms and kids running commentaries.

I recently overheard conversations at popular box stores that went like this… “Honey, let’s wait until we see if we REALLY NEED these folders”,  “We’ll pick up more supplies after we get paid on the 30th, so you will need to wait until the paycheck clears and see what we have left”,  “Not this year, we will all need to learn to do without new clothing”.

The situation is so dire for some that they are writing to online sites such EDUCATION.com asking where families can access the very basics of school supplies.  So, here is a list of what is being offered and how you can help.  Please feel free to add to this list to help others in your communities.

STAPLES is offering a DO SOMETHING 101 Campaign

Local school districts often have donations and give assistance to students in need. Here is one example from BALTIMORE CITY SCHOOLS

WALMART has several events to help with charitable community donations such as this STUFF THE BUS

Here is a blog about how to purchase supplies that cost practically nothing

My company SIGNING FAMILIES  donated our ASL folders and other products to area WASHINGTON DC schools.  If you are a small or large business owner will you join me by donating in your area, too?

Talent Agents and Young Performers – the “411”

◊  Today I was lucky to have interviewed on radio Danette Linicomn from The Liniocomn Agency.  She hails from Dallas and represents all ages and sizes. We really clicked!  She shared some sage advice which should be considered essential by any parent who has a child interested in the acting profession.  I  am happy to share it with you and also some great resource links below.

Here are some great suggestions:

1- Be careful for what you pay for.  The classes sound great, the commercials sound promising, but no one can guarantee that your child will make it in “show biz”- no one.

2- Be prepared.  Having a child actor is work for the whole family.  It also can be expensive and time consuming. Headshots, resume services and acting classes all cost money.  And when you are with your child at an audition or on the set, chances are your work productivity is compromised, too.  So, be aware and be prepared.

3- Danette recommends that only franchised and registered Talent Agents represent your child.  If they are not licensed or in franchised then it is possible that they are a “scam” or worse.  Be an educated and cautious consumer.

4- Education is important, including for working actors. Although many working actors are schooled on sets or within their homes. This is a personal choice.

5- Actors come in all sizes and shapes.  Danette indicated that many casting directors now want “real people” which is why she has a REEL  department in her agency. (Submissions welcome )

6- Deaf actors and those who are fluent signers are sought after, as well. Danette will be joining forces with an LA agency that specializes with representing talent who have unique language abilities or special needs. (Addison Witt  Talent Agency)

7- Voiceover talent can make a living, however, this is a crowded field and many don’t  last long in this niche market.

Here are some excellent resources for parents of working actors to peruse and become informed.

Note: The children in the photo above are all working actors who have been American Sign Language (ASL) models in video and print for my company SIGNING FAMILIES™   .  They are NOT represented by the the Linicomn Agency .   However, they do  show that acting kids come in all sizes and shapes!

COMING UP ON NEXT MONTHS PARENTING THE TALENT SHOW August 30th  as part of the 411 VOICES Arts , Entertainment and the Business of it ALL series..

BACK TO SCHOOL PRODUCTS !  Do you have a product or service that would be perfect for home or set educated young performers?  Pitch it to me! Comment below and we will be in touch! THANKS!

Raising a Confident Kid / Tween / Teen Model

Once a month I host a radio program titled, Parenting the Talent. I have blogged before that I was inspired to do so as a way “pay it forward” to parents and professionals who helped our family when my daughter, Natasha Sattler  was first starting out as a professional actor. Today I had the opportunity to interview Marlene Wallach,  CEO and President of the Wilhelmina Kid- Teen Modeling Agency and author of an array of self -esteem and inspirational books aimed at the tween-teen audience.

Marlene, who hails from my native state of New York and makes me yearn for “home” with her New York accent, gave tons of sage information during our interview. Much of this information is available through her very cheery and comprehensive website geared for the tween and teen crowd – Just Ask Marlene or JAM! On the website one can check out her book which offers the “411” about beauty, fashion and also provides help for those kids who are having a difficult time with self-esteem during the tricky adolescent phase of life.

Below are the highlights of our interview. To hear the interview in its’ entirety please go to iTunes (press the June 28th tab)  or Blog Talk Radio.

Marlene provided solid information which included the following important words or wisdom for parents and aspiring modelsL

1- Modeling involves the WHOLE FAMILY.  The entire family will be impacted when one or more members becomes a professional model. Therefore, the WHOLE family needs to understand that changes will occur to family dynamics and routines. Also, commitments need to be honored, even when there is a class trip planned or other event.

2- Education is important. Marlene did not advocate for homeschooling when it came to professional models because of her concerns with socialization. However, she understood that sometimes circumstances necessitate home educating a child. She did mention that summertime was the busiest for kid models with back to school, Halloween and Christmas holiday print and commercial jobs. Therefore, many kids are working models during the “off season” where schooling is concerned.

3. Headshots that look natural are key for older tweens and teens.  And a quality snapshot is acceptable for younger children. (Leave the makeup bag at home! If you are 12, look 12 in your photo.)

4. Parents within the special education community wrote in prior to the show with some questions.  Some have children with Autism or Downs Syndrome. Louise asked Marlene about the likelihood that children with special needs would find regular assignments within the modeling world. She indicated that children with special needs are a niche market and while some companies, such as Toys R Us, conduct many print advertisements with inclusion in mind, most print ads do not incorporate a large number of children with exceptional needs. Yet, Marlene did add a caveat that children who are cooperative, take direction, are able to demonstrate sound reading skills, have parents who are easy going and they too “follow directions” will be more successful in the modeling world.

5. Modeling is an investment.  Parents should be aware that there are “start up fees” such as headshots and resumes.  Also, maintenance fees, such as for travel or wardrobe.

Meet Walden, age 16 and working professional model

1. Marlene noted that most modeling agencies choose 90% of their roster of kids to represent via photos they receive. Traditional “snail” mail is best. Open call does not generate as many contracts as many believe. Marlene gave an example that at a recent open call her agency conducted they interviewed 1500 kids. They signed 30. And of those only five will have regular work. This is not a career for the weary (child nor parents).

2. Marlene advised Walden to make her audition remarkable.  Walden asked how she could best leave an “impression” with the agents when they see so many “new faces” during an open call.  Marlene suggested that she tell a joke or say something that would quickly show her “personality” and help agents to recall her name, face and the lasting “impression” come the end of a busy day when decisions need to be made.

Summertime Learning for ADULTS!

Today as I am writing this post it is a hot (95 degrees) and humid (90%) day in the greater Washington D.C. area.  Don’t make any mistake in thinking that this is a “dry heat”.  So, I am especially grateful to Willis Haviland Carrier, who purportedly invented the air conditioner.  This little piece of trivia is new to me and I will add it to the list of “things” I learned during 2011.

I was raised in a home where education ruled supreme.  And after watching and reading commentary about   OPRAH‘s tribute to her by the Moorehouse University graduates who she supported, I gather that we were not the only ones.  But, if there is one thing I know for sure- it is that one should never stop learning or you just mentally wilt.    (You can watch Oprah’s surprise here)

So, here is my list of things that I want to learn the Summer of 2011.  (And add yours to the comments below!)

1- Zumba.  Yes, I want to learn more about this form of dance. Would love to hear from others who have tried this dance and exercise form.

2-  Learn about HTML. That is a computer term and program “thing” – for those who may need to brush up on it, like me.

3– Read more.  I want to read about a random topic.  I haven’t picked it out – yet.  That will take a trip to the library. And thank the goodness we still have libraries!

4. Learn how to play Mahjong.

and lastly… 5.  Learn more about how to operate my “fancy” camera.

TAG – YOU’RE IT!  What will you learn this Summer?
