FAQs to know for when you get started.

  • Sign language often uses only one hand.  It is best if you sign with your dominant hand in these situations.
  • Try to learn five signs at a time.  This way you won’t feel pressured to master too many signs in a single time frame.
  • Start with signs that you NEED to know or WANT to know.  Where you begin will depend on your own personal needs.
  • Try and take advantage of good resources. Of course, I would love you to explore our Signing Families website, but I would be remiss if not letting you know that we also have many links on our site to help you learn from others, too! Ask for help from those who know ASL, too!
  • Immerse yourself in the deaf community to help improve your skills.
  • HAVE FUN!!  Enjoy the journey of learning sign language!
