Would you rather be SMART or LUCKY?

“Would you rather be smart or lucky?”, I was asked by a cameraman who was shooting some video last week of Beth Engeleman and myself. Hmmm.  That is a loaded question, I thought!  At first I blurted out, “LUCKY!” – as I have already thought that I have had an enormous amount of luck in my life.  It is fate/luck that born me in to a family that was able to provide, nurture and love me.  Some people are not that “lucky”.  Then I thought again and of course changed to “SMART”.  I guess I was contemplating that some circumstances are due to good planning and education – and that takes “smarts”.

Days later I am back to vacillating on the answer…. URGH!! So my readers, let me pose the question to YOU… If given a choice would you rather be SMART or LUCKY.  Keep in mind this is a choice.  Can’t wait to read your comments.  By the way – Beth couldn’t decide either!

Peacock Pottery is PERFECT for Empty Nesters!

Ok- after nearly two years of denial I will admit that hubby and I are officially empty nesters.  I know this to be true as I am busy packing up our DC area house to head west to a new residence and opportunity in California.  When one packs up nearly 20 years of “life” it is hard not to keep everything and anything.  I managed to toss and donate a fair amount, but one thing that was non-negotiable was my pottery collection.

My most recent edition was a great baking dish from the collection of  Peacock Pottery.  They specialize in pottery imported from Poland and it is BEAUTIFUL!  They sent me a great sample of their amazing pottery and asked me to use it in a very practical and day to day manner.  So, I made a lot of “meals for two” using this fun size pottery. I loved that it was small enough for our larger sized toaster oven and didn’t need to have me fire up the big oven for our dinner. But, make no mistake, this is a great piece of pottery and certainly not for “easy bake ovens”!

What did I make? The first night I made a combo of chicken, stuffing, vegetables and CRAISINS. ( I really do love the “craisin”).  It baked up like a charm! I was able to put all the ingredients together in to the single dish and bake for about 30 minutes. (I used precooked chicken- yes I “cheat” when I am busy packing).

Secondly, I used the dish for some homemade brownies with white chocolate chips.  YUMMY!!  (Also, I found that the dish was great for reheating, too!)

Best of all this quality pottery is easy to wash, microwave, put in the fridge and even use as a decorative piece. I have given several other Peacock Pottery pieces as gifts. The serving bowls were a hit with my daughter and the Christmas ornaments made for lovely gifts for friends.

Forgiveness Sets You Free

Once upon a time, I convinced myself that not forgiving others meant they couldn ̳t hurt me again. I believed my holding a grudge would remind them they couldn ̳t do that to me without repercussions. I told myself it was for the better, it was self- protection and I thought it was self–caring. But, the truth is, it was sucking the life out of me. I carried each person and each situation around like an energetic garbage bag, slung heavily over my shoulder through each step in my life.

All the reasons I held onto grudges worked against me. Bitterness did not protect me, it burdened me. Grudges did not separate me from anyone harmful; they kept me married to them through my various colors of judgment, condemnation and hate. This behavior didn ̳t allow me to love myself because I was busy destroying others with my thoughts and emotions. Bitterness was a bitter pill I swallowed over and over again and then blamed others for making me gulp. Withholding forgiveness did not end the terrible hurt I felt, it kept the hurt cemented and brought the hurt forward into each day, month and year.

Then I learned there was another way. Engaging in the act of forgiveness changed my life. I learned through doing inner healing work to forgive meant to dissipate and end the actual anger and hurt. Forgiving others took me off the bitter hook, and forgiving made me free.

Sometimes a picture can say it so much better!

I wish I knew who to give credit to for these photos or posters in my slideshow. They came to me via various sources through emails and Facebook.  In my opinion, all are worth sharing because they are just too wonderful to read or view.  Enjoy your new year and may it be full of beauty and wisdom, as well.

Oh The Places You Will Go…..

This year has been one of grand high points and some that were a bit… not high.  Despite some of the events of the year that I would like to put way behind me, such as kicking cancer out the back door, I was so fortunate to put on a bunch of air miles for work (which really is loads of fun!) I was invited to be a guest speaker at several conferences, workshops and expos this year.  I had a wonderful time at MACWORLD 2011, EMS conferences in many states and much more.   I truly enjoyed meeting and greeting thousands at conferences where I was asked to speak about helping children with special needs during disasters or medical emergencies. It was an unbelievable privilege for me to work in tandem with many in the EMS community this year. I wish I could name each person individually who took time out of their day to learn sign language in order to effectively communicate with a child or adult who is deaf or uses sign.   I snapped a zillion photos this year.   These are from visits to California, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, Florida, New Jersey, Wyoming and Colorado.  And, a few are from my own “backyard” here in the metro DC area.  Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

My Year of Learning How to Kick Cancer to the Door

It has been a year since I heard the words that no one wants to have burned in to their brain- Sorry, but you have metastatic cancer.  Yep, that was me.  A little more than a year ago.  It was a sunny day. I was going for what was suppose to be a “no brainer” ultrasound of a few “probably nothing” nodes in my neck. I walked in an optomist thinking of nothing more than how I would spend the rest of the day after the procedure shopping.   I walked out of Johns Hopkins outpatient center a statistic – someone with cancer. WOW! In fact, according to some recent stats, I was one of 357,000 women living with Thyroid cancer. Oh Goody!

Because people sometimes read what I write or ask me to speak in media, I get to talk about my Life with Cancer – a lot. As an educator, I don’t mind. It gives me an opportunity to set the record straight and educate others about being proactive with personal health issues. I learned from the best on how to be an example of someone who lives with cancer BUT is not defined by cancer, from my friend and colleague, Maimah Karmo.   I learned to blog about my  pre-op, post-op and treatment phases. I helped others learn too by talking to groups, being interviewed and blogging for others on websites such as, DEAR THYROID.    I even filmed a PSA for IamtheFACEofTHYROIDDISEASE.org.

I learned that you can’t be a member of this “club” alone. That people will come and rally around you. Friends and family will support you in ways that are just too numerous to count. I was really lucky to have a bunch of Cancer Warriors join my team. They all should know who they are and consider this a group hug and THANK YOU!   And, a huge thanks to  all the Top Docs at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  Overall, I was damn lucky this year to have so many in my corner.

I realized pretty quickly that if I had to go through this crap that I should do it with grace, humor and a purpose. So, I decided to run a TWITTER SCARF campaign. I stole the idea from my friend, Shara Lawrence-Weiss.  (Pictured wearing her TWITTER avatar hat.Read the TWITTER story here). In essence, I changed my TWITTER avatar to be a free advertisement for a company or foundation. I simply would wear a different scarf and photo shop their logo.  The company would then in turn donate monies to the charity of their choice. I had a lot of response and together we all donate almost a thousand dollars. Purpose.. yep- cancer can give you purpose when you are not caught up in the anger.

Now it was not all fun and games. Cancer never is. The treatment for thyroid cancer is not as bad as other cancers. I didn’t have to have chemotherapy, but I did need to have Radioactive Iodine treatments – which are no joy.  The worst part of the process, however is the waiting. Did the treatment work? Do I need another? Is anything else growing and if so, where?

I also learned some really important life lessons. Cancer is expensive and insurance companies can’t make those co-pays magically disappear.   I learned that not all people want to stick by you and remain friends because cancer may be “contagious”.  Real friends stick around and those who are just in it for only the “good” but not the “bad or the ugly” will run for the hills.  I heard from others who also are in the cancer world that it is not uncommon for  relationships to unravel. That is a shame, but a reality. As I mentioned, I’m grateful for those who stuck around (including my amazing hubby) and deleted the rest. Cancer can be an emotional brain sucker.  No need to spend any synapses worrying about those who were afraid that they may “catch’ the BIG C.

I will no doubt have more journey in the coming years. Cancer doesn’t like to just go away easily. There is always follow-up scans, blood work and more. Even if you are in remission you still have “more to do”.  But, I intend to kick cancer to the door in 2012. Not the front door, but the back door. Cancer doesn’t have the right to go out nicely.

Lastly, Happy Holidays and please feel free to share your pearls of wisdom if you too have been on a cancer journey this year or in the past. Let’s all learn from each other.

The Perfect Gifts for the Hard to Buy Family Members, Co-Workers or Friends

Kids are usually easy to buy for this time of year. If it appears on television -they want it. If it has buttons to press – they want it.  Sometimes, I seem to get stuck for gifts for family members, friends and co-workers.  But, this year I got lucky. I decided to think a bit out of the box for some of my gifts.   Hope you enjoy my list…

  • KINDLE FIRE.  I will admit it I was a bit skeptical about this tiny device. Especially since what I really wanted was the iPad.  Despite my attempts at trying to win an iPad or save for one, I always managed not to succeed. So, when the FIRE was announced I decided to compromise. I am not at all disappointed. In fact, I LOVE IT!!!! Easy, fun and loads of battery life! A great gift (as are the other Kindles) at $199 or less for older versions.  And in case you are wondering.. I bought Kindles for others, too!

  • PEACOCK POTTERY    I love this company.  A mompreneur own this business and the pricing is very reasonable. Last year I gave out amazing ornaments to many of my friends and this year I bought a cute bowl for our daughter.  It comes packaged ready to put under the tree or give as a non-holiday gift.
  • MAN SHOES   I reviewed this book a week ago and it has continued to “stick” with me.  This is one of those gifts that could be given to the hard to buy for hubby, father or friend.
  • GIFT CERTIFICATES from SMALL ONLINE BUSINESSES.   It is no secret that I love and support online businesses.  Let me (re)introduce you to some of my favorites in this category and suggest that you get one of their gift certificates.
Shara Lawrence-Weiss makes one of a kind books using photos that you supply.  I love that she can write the text in the language of  your choosing or make it bilingual
This online store is dedicated to offering educational and recreational materials for children and families with special needs.  Another mom owned business who gives back to the community
A subscription to abcteach.com is the PERFECT gift for any teacher or college student majoring in education. Chocked full of downloads and classroom materials.  A favorite gift that I often give to graduating seniors who are hoping to get a classroom of their own

♦Business Coaching

Do you know someone who has a great idea, but needs help “jump starting”?   Consider the gift of a consultation session with a reputable business coach with a great track record. Or perhaps give some assistance by offering media consultation or advertising help, as well. I know each one of these women and would recommend them all.
Note:  These experts all have different coaching styles or offer different services for budding entrepreneurs.

Lastly, consider giving a gift that helps another in need. If you read my previous post, you will learn how you can help children and families still devastated by the March 2011 tsunami in Japan
