I am writing this ongoing post just in time for SMALL BUSINESS SHOPPING SATURDAY
Each day this week I am going to add to my list of Cool and Groovy holiday picks which SPOTLIGHT Small Businesses. This is my way to acknowledge that we need to cheer for the underdogs, too- Work at Home Moms (WAHM) in particular!
My first picks is as follows:
PEACOCK POTTERY-
I love this business because it is so UNIQUE. I was able to order three lovely Christmas ornaments to give to friends. The website was VERY easy to negotiate and the pottery arrived pronto with an abundance of care. Priced very reasonably and shipping costs were minimal, too. Here is the info about discounts from owner, Leah
HG25 at checkout for 25% off. No minimum purchase required. Discount also applies to sale items. (as listed on http://www.MommyPerks.com)
Hold on to your hats… ABRIELLE MULLINS has ARRIVED!
I recently was on business in Alabama when I met the most extra- ordinary 15 year old. Abrielle Mullins was quite impressive. This homeschooled self professed lover of all things “math” was much more than your average teen. She was an amazing songwriter and singer. She also made me again realize that there is hope in the future of our world because of kids like her! Abrielle (pronounced like Gabriel without the “G”) made me a fan of her style of country music- which I must say was exceptional. We chatted for quite some time as Abrielle explained that she was an “old soul”. She started writing stories at the age of five and then eventually melodies. She truly writes from the heart, including her tunes Here in My Heart (dedicated to her Grandfather) andYou’re My Rain– a tune which was written to honor our soldiers. Although many of her songs have co-writers or musicians who helped her through her debut album- the voice is all hers. With permission I have a sample below. ENJOY! And if you wish to learn more about Abrielle or purchase her music stay tuned… her website and iTunes album should launch any day now! I know she will be a huge success which is why I had her autograph my personal CD copy right away!
Here is a sample of her album title track- You’re My Rain Abrielle Mullins- You’re My Rain… Debut CD album 2010

I know a lot of students who are not big fans of science. Astronomy can be fascinating and challenging at the same time! So many facts to remember. And what about all those revolutions around the sun! Well, author Jennifer Ulm is a fan of both children books and science which helped her to create a very clever introduction to astronomy to share with elementary students. Her use of poetry/prose to keep the attention span of children is very unique with a topic as difficult as science.
I must admit that I was engaged equally by the illustrations from Nata Matlukh as much as the story. Very bright pictures with the planets having faces that were so full of expression and matched the story perfectly.
This book also comes with a back story. Dedicated to the author’s eccentric and fun loving Uncle Jon who was both a friend and a role model for the written word. Also, it was a joy to read on their website www.ShoddyShirtBooks.com that a portion of the proceeds of this educational book goes back to the Reading is Fundamental Program!
This book is worth the price which is a very respectable $5.95 I would buy it in a heartbeat if I were an elementary school teacher who taught science. The activities and bonus information posted in the back of the book are features that makes the book well worth room on any school shelf!
