The Joy of Gentle Travel: Exploring Without the Rush

Gentle travel is a term I am going to use to describe the “less athletically adventurous traveler”. A gentle traveler loves to watch the whales from a cruise balcony or prefers lingering in a museum in Paris versus rushing past the lesser-known works of a great art master.

Gentle travel is my jam! I’m not one to traipse up steep mountains or plunge into the deep blue abyss with scuba gear. You won’t catch this “mature body” free-falling from planes or navigating the wild rapids of Colorado (my back would never forgive me!). Instead, you’ll find me leisurely strolling through parks with maybe one or two hills, stopping to sniff flowers and snap pics of sculptures. Vintage stores and flea markets? Yes, please! I’d rather learn to whip up a local delicacy or wander into a cafe where the locals hang out than chase after popular tourist spots. Call me a cultural explorer—adventure seeker? Nah, I’m just here for the snacks and sights!

So, if you are a “gentle traveler” – read on to discover some of my recommendations and resources. Keep in mind that my list will change as I find myself discovering new destinations.

KAUAI

Kauai can easily be called my “Happy Place”. This island is filled with brilliant vistas and sunsets that seem to last forever. It is unhurried and for the most part unspoiled by massive tourism. If you love nature and want to see beautiful waterfalls up close – come to Kauai. Note: you can opt to explore this island “gently”, but if you are traveling with a more adventurous companion, there are plenty of exhilarating hikes to keep him or her entertained!

NEW ORLEANS

New Orleans boasts an enchanting flat landscape, perfect for exploration! We wandered for miles, never encountering any daunting hills, making it ideal for anyone biking or navigating with a motorized wheelchair. As you stroll, you’ll discover a treasure trove of remarkable restaurants and vibrant jazz clubs at every turn! Our group of friends delighted in the captivating WWII Museum, experienced a charming steamboat ride on the Natchez while enjoying jazz and brunch, and reveled in the insightful walking and driving tours led by amazing docents.

New Orleans is not for the person who wants to kick back and relax. It is where the good times roll! Read more about New Orleans here.

MARBELLA, SPAIN

At the very south of Spain lies the enchanting region of Andalusia. This captivating area invites families and couples to stroll its vibrant streets at night, soaking in the lively music and savoring delectable meals. It’s a place where individuality is cherished and expressed. Here, the seamless meeting of the sea and shore creates a breathtaking backdrop, making it a photographer’s dream come true!
