December Newsletter: 2013 in Review, ASL Style

Happy December! I know every year has 12 months, yet this year seemed to have gone by in a flash! I use to keep better track of the seasons, and time in general, during the “parenting years” – when I had kids in school. Back then I knew what month it was by what PTA project I volunteered to do. October was the Halloween parade, December was buying teacher holiday gifts, and so on. Now that my kids are grown and my status is that of having a “low occupancy home”, I realized that I must now resort to keeping track of the old fashioned way- by the iCal app! Which explains why the alarm on my desktop went off yesterday with a message reading- “WRITE ANNUAL YEAR IN REVIEW BLOG TODAY”.

I know myself too well, the alarm went off again today flashing – “YOU FORGOT TO WRITE YOUR ANNUAL YEAR IN REVIEW BLOG – DO IT NOW!”

So here it goes… Nearly 4800 people have found our SIGNING FAMILIES Facebook page. I used this social media page to help people to learn about sign language (ASL) and the deaf community. I also focused during the year on issues regarding Autism, Down Syndrome and education. Then I sprinkled a hefty dose of humor, inspiration and giveaways!

Back to School… What your student needs to put in their backpack that is NOT a school supply

WOW! Is it me, or did this summer ‘fly by”? Well, if it is August then that means just one thing to an educator/ parent/ retail store owner – BACK TO SCHOOL!

Ahhh… the smell of new pencils, paper and notebooks! Oh wait- that was my memory from 30 years ago.. now in the year 2013 we have recollections of the smell of a freshly unboxed iPad and earbuds!

Do we still have backpacks? I hope so as I have amassed a list of what a student should put in their backpack that is NOT a school supply!

A list of emergency contacts. Whether your students is 6 or 16, a list of emergency contacts can be a lifesaver. Don’t assume that the child will remember all the names, numbers and addresses or that they are in their cell phone, so there is no need to write them down.
List of any medications they are taking or are allergic to (and in general any allergies)
Emergency money for lunch or a cab ride home. I still have a recurring nightmare of having forgotten my lunch money and my mom having to come and bring me lunch. The principal was not the happiest “camper” on a good day, so having a student in the office when she wanted to leave was intimidating to say the least!

Unraveling the mystery of mortgages with Maria West

If you are like me you have NO IDEA about the intracacies surrounding mortgages! Frankly, I have relied on “hubby” to help me understand what I “needed” to know about obtaining our various mortgages . I am sure that I am not the only one.

In hindsight, I really wished I had taken the time to learn more about what is involved with obtaining a mortgage (and finance in general). So, to help further my own learning and anyone else who wishes to unravel the mystery of mortgages I have invited this Sunday, August 11, 2013 at 9-ET to the LOUISE SATTLER SHOW LA based mortgage broker, Maria West.
